BoBA spokesperson, Kenny Maragana told Monitor Sport after the event that they are excited by the increase in the number of boxers that participated in the tournament compared to the last one that was held at UB.

He said the highlight of the tournament was that a majority of the boxers were youngsters. “Some of the fights did not take place because of time constraints and some clubs did not turn up. The association is concentrating much on development and to see such numbers is a step in the right direction,” he said.

The next inter-club tournament would be held in Ghanzi.

The tournament started with women bouts. The most interesting bout in the 60kg category was between Keamogetse Kenosi of Diamond Trading Company Boxing Club (DTCB) and Nametsegang Makaba of Mafika Boxing Club. Kenosi won with a technical knock out (TKO) in round two.  Kenosi is a nominee for junior sportsperson of the year in the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) awards. Kutlwano Ogaketse of DTCB faced Motlhanka Thabang of Mafika club under the youth category. Ogaketse also won by a TKO.

Atang Mosenke who has graduated from the youth category decided to surrender in fear of Keoagile Rantutu of SSKB Boxing Club.

The audience was left in stitches by a fight between Onkabetse Wamasika of UB boxing club and Kanta Suzuki in the 52kg category. Suzuki’s short frame made it difficult for him to reach out to his opponent.

Wamasika showered him with punches, but Suzuki eventually took advantage of Wamasika’s tiredness and threw some punches. However, Wamasika won 3-0.
