Incensed: Morima says textile workers are being exploited

Anthony Morima told an educational workshop during Botswana Textile, Manufacturing and Packaging Workers Union (BOTEMAPAWU) Labour Day commemoration last week that labour officers do not inspect factories.

He said whenever the officers conduct inspections, they are bribed by factory owners to write favourable reports. “Even medical reports are ‘cooked’,” said Morima. He gave the example of a worker who was suffering from a lung condition but when he was taken for medical checkup, he was given a clean bill of health. He said in terms of hours of work and protective clothing, some companies treat employees horribly.

He said the employees work under degrading conditions. BOTEMAPAWU commemorated the day under the theme: “Workers, Know Your Rights!” The commemoration was held at Lady Masire Youth Centre in Gaborone West. It was attended by employees working in different factories across the country.
