New MP Delivers Water To Mmathethe

The Mmathethe-Molapowabojang MP was instrumental in making sure that the village of more than 6,000 people got water from a new borehole.

Last week, the pumping of water from the borehole that was sunk 17km away from the village started with residents eagerly waiting to have a steady supply for the first time in three years.  Mmathethe’s old borehole has failed, forcing the Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) to transport water to the huge population in the village. But this would soon be history after the MP together with his private sector partner, Diagnofirm, sunk and equipped the new borehole near Segwagwa.

Last Tuesday, samples of water were taken for testing, after the borehole pumped its first 30 litres. A delighted Madigele said Diagnofirm, a medical laboratory company, came to the rescue of Mmathethe by funding the digging, equipping, and fencing of the borehole. The project is estimated to have cost more than P200,000. The MP said they have reached an agreement with WUC that as a stop-gap measure, the corporation would be boursing water from the borehole to the reservoir in the village. In the meantime, WUC will also look for funds to lay a 17km pipeline from the borehole to the village.

Madigele said the process of sinking the borehole was complicated as he had to engage the Village Development Committee (VDC), dikgosi, WUC and the Geological Services in Lobatse, who had to map out the area to determine where the water is. “They eventually advised us about a borehole 17km away, which belongs to the government, and we started equipping it, and fencing it with the help of our private sector partner,” Madigele said. Besides the borehole, the MP has secured a plot for the construction of a police facility in Mmathethe, the constituency headquarters. He said the project will also be constructed through private funds. The MP has said he has acquired a plot to build a youth and recreation centre.
