Rivals: Fighters (in yellow) and Santos are locked in a protest over soft points

Fighters were scheduled to host the first leg against Green Lovers from Serowe in Gaborone this weekend with the reverse fixture a week later.

The First Division South committee was supposed to hear the Santos’ protest on Wednesday evening, but failed to form a quorum. The committee was expected to meet last night.

Santos are arguing Fighters cannot finish above them through soft points after the Mogoditshane side was awarded points for an abandoned match against Gantsi Terrors. The Fighters versus Terrors match had to be called-off after a Terrors player assaulted an assistant referee.  First Division South committee chairperson, Sam Keitireng told Mmegi Sport he expected the matter to be resolved under the guidance of the play rules and regulations.  Fighters finished the league with 39 points while Santos had 38. Fighters coach, Mpho Mabogo argued that they were not awarded soft points.

He also said Santos must not involve themselves as they have nothing to do with the case. He explained that Santos would rather have advised the committee than to complain about soft points.

He stated that such issues always affect players as they prepare for play-offs. The former Zebras striker said his side was looking forward to this weekend match against Green Lovers, but have been left disappointed.

Meanwhile, Keitireng said the committee would draw up rules and regulations to be used during the play- offs.

The first leg will now take place next weekend in Gaborone on Saturday while the return leg is on May 14 in Serowe.
