Government Spokesperson Dr Jeff Ramsay said in a press statement released today, 'It has come to the attention of this Office that some perpetrator/s have decided to create a fake Facebook account for His Honour the Vice President.'

The statement further said, 'This Office would like to state for the record that this Facebook account does does not belong to and is not in any way linked to His Honour the Vice President. Members of the public are therefore informed to disregard this account.'

Ramsay reminded the public that abuse of online communication could attract penalties under the domestic and international cyber crime laws.

The Vice President fake account comes barely eight months after Mokgweetsi Masisi uttered the infamous 'Tom Mang Mang' speech that was leaked from Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) general elections’ social media strategy.

In the leaked recording vice president Masisi disclosed how the ruling BDP would create fake Facebook accounts to peddle the party's propaganda on social media.

'Mo social media re thibile, rea go oketsa. re ipitsa ka maina a eseng a rona. Re ta ipitsa bo Tom Mang Mang', Masisi boasted in the leaked recording.

Eight months later Masisi's office says, 'We find it unfortunate that there are some within our society who continue to misuse online media to tarnish the image of others or otherwise misinform members of the public.'
