Ball watching: Bona elected a new committee over the weekend to drive netball forward

BONA president, Tebogo Lebotse-Sebego retained her position as the body prepares to host the 2017 World Youth Netball Championships.

Representatives from 14 netball teams, comprising of five from the north and nine from the south took part in the elective meeting.

Lorato Thebekgosi is the new vice president-technical while Kelebogile Maplanka, previous the publicity officer, takes charge of the vice president -projects and events portfolio.

Dr Keba Hulela comes in as the new secretary general while Gaone Kepadisa is the treasurer.

Kealeboga Ramogojwa replaces Maplanka as the netball body’s spokesperson. Kgomotso Ntukufula, who is new in the committee, fills the position of development officer.

Apart from the elections, amendments to the constitution were also done and thereafter it was adopted.

Men’s netball has been incorporated into the BONA constitution.

After the elections, BONA president, Lebotse-Sebego said she was satisfied with progress at the meeting.

She said the way elections went would motivate the new committee to work hard in order to deliver on its mandate.

Lebotse-Sebego urged the committee to work hard saying a lot needs to be done to improve netball.

She encouraged netball players to have passion for the game.

“Netballers should have passion and love (for the game). So, whatever they do should be in the interest of netball,” Lebotse-Sebego said.

She said a lot has been achieved under her leadership, which includes the reviewing of policy documents paving the way for the establishment of structures within the association as well as sending some players to the  Singapore National League.

Even though netball has no sponsor to date, some of Sebego’s achievements include securing a P1 million sponsorship from Spar and twice taking the netball team to the World Championships.

However, Lebotse-Sebego said a lot needs to be done to halt the decline in the number of netball teams.

She said the committee has to come up with a strategy to retain affiliates.

Another major challenge she has to address is looking for a league sponsor since the Spar deal expired last season.

The committee would have its work cut out as the country prepares to host the 2017 netball youth tournament.
