Police see nothing special about Segametsi�s unveiling

Assistant station commander, Kabelo Bome yesterday revealed that the police had received the invitation last Thursday and were considering the family’s request. He however said that there would be no special treatment given to the event.
“We did receive the invitation last Thursday, and just like any other event we are considering attending it,” he said.
“There, however, will be no special treatment as there are tombstone unveilings that happen everyday. There is nothing special about this one,” he said.
Bome further stated that police would follow their mandate of protecting “life and property,” and would avail themselves.
Mogomotsi was a 14-year-old schoolgirl who was found murdered on November 6 1994, after she had missing. Her body was found naked and mutilated, leading to suspicions that her murder was for ritualistic purposes.
This sparked riots from her schoolmates at the Radikolo Community Junior Secondary School, spilling into the broader Mochudi community, as rumours spread that powerful political figures were behind the alleged ritual murder, and were being protected by the security authorities.
The protests led to riots in neighbouring villages as well as the capital, Gaborone. No one has ever been charged or linked to the teenager’s murder and it remains a sore point among many in the country.
Mogomotsi’s maternal Aunt, Bontle Mogomotsi told Mmegi that the family had received a lot of support from the general public and was looking forward to a successful unveiling.
“We sent our invitation to all churches around Mochudi and have confirmed their attendance. Other members of the public have also confirmed their attendance,” she said.
She further stated that: “We also sent our an invitation to the police who later called asking us when the programme would start, but they have not yet indicated whether they will be present.”
The Mogomotsi family plans to hold an all night prayer on Friday before heading to the cemetery on Saturday.
