BNFYL wants Batswana students evacuated from SA

Speaking at a press conference at the BNFYL offices, secretary general, Arafat Khan said Batswana students should be evacuated until there is guarantee that the situation in South Africa had stabilised. “We are disturbed by lack of decisive action from our government as far as protecting our citizens in that country (is concerned). We are aware that our students mostly staying in Durban have been neglected by government. We call on the government of Botswana to put the lives of its citizens first and evacuate our students who are trapped in this unsafe situation back to Botswana until there is a guarantee that the situation has stabilised,” Khan argued.
He said the BNFYL is deeply saddened by the recent attacks perpetuated by South Africans against fellow Africans from other countries.
He added that the loss of lives and injuries suffered by victims of the attacks, from intolerant and criminal-minded South Africans, was totally unjustifiable under any circumstances and must be condemned by all.
Khan said the African Union (AU) structures should carry out proper investigations on the human rights violations that had taken place in South Africa and establish whether the government had done enough to prevent the attacks or not. He said statements uttered by the Zulu king that called for foreign nationals in South Africa to leave, should be condemned. On other issues, Khan said Botswana National Youth Council (BNYC) is a toothless bull-dog serving the interests of the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP). “We call for an expeditious and transparent investigations into the alleged corruption at that organisation. It is our expectation that the wrongdoers shall be subjected to the full weight of the law. We further call for the artists who have been implicated in corruption at BNYC to reimburse the organisation its money,” he said.
