Also having football lovers on the edge of their chairs are protests that have clouded the league in the past week.
Mochudi Centre Chiefs are currently leading the title race with 60 points, eight points adrift of their nearest rivals, Township Rollers on 52 points. The team needs only four points from the remaining games to lay their hand on the title.
Presently in a forbidding mood, they are enjoying a good run of results. The last time they lost was at the hands of third placed Orapa United last year.
Chiefs’ shattered Orapa United and Township Rollers’ title dreams and the latter two are also experiencing some nightmarish run of results. What is left of the two teams is hope. Hope that Magosi drop points in their upcoming games so they could pounce.
On the other side of the table, league debutants Letlapeng have relegated to the first division. The other team that have very low chances of survival is Ecco City Greens.
Mamojadiski could be demoted to the second tier of Botswana football structures if they do not collect maximum points in their next fixture.
Not so far away from the chop are Nico United, BR Highlanders, FC Satmos and Notwane.
On the other hand Extension Gunners, premier league rookies Sankoyo Bush Bucks, Police XI and BMC will have a battle of their own in trying to secure a place in the top 8. The premier league Disciplinary Committee (DC) has received a number of protests on their desk in the past week.
Letlapeng have appealed their case against Chiefs while Orapa United have also protested against Chiefs. Both teams are questioning the eligibility of Pontsho Moloi to play, as they believe the player has received five yellow cards this season, but has never served a suspension.
On the other hand, Sankoyo Bush Bucks have been docked three points and two goals after losing their case against Motlakase Power Dynamos.
The DC had ruled that Bucks’ Morris Ruzivo is a defaulter. Letlapeng is also said to have filed a protest against Sankoyo over the use of the same player. It will be interesting to see the outcome of the cases as they may change the standings in the table. The other interesting battle in the league is the race for the green boot. Currently, Chiefs’ attacker Lemponye Tshireletso leads the race with 14 goals. In the second place is Orapa United’s Hendrick Moyo with 13 goals, while Manqoba Ngwenya of Township Rollers, Morris Ruzivo and Orapa United’s Patrick Lenyeletse are all on 11 goals. Except for Ngwenya, who scored in the last fixture, the other contenders failed to increase their tally in their last games.
