Unveiling the new gadget at the Old Billingsgate in central London, Huawei chief executive officer for Consumer Business Group Richard Yu said, “P8 is a perfect blend of technology, sleek styling, usability and revolutionary low light camera features.” Yu boasted of P8 saying, “It is a revolutionary light painting smartphone that breaks new ground in ‘fashionology’ by combining the best of fashion and technology.”

He said the new smartphone takes beauty to another level.

“The Huawei P8 takes beauty to the next level, striking a flawless balance of artistry and creativity. Based on a deep understanding of human-machine design, the Huawei P8 delivers a new level of usability for applications impacting everyday life – at work and at play,” said Yu. Yu explained that Huawei P8 was born from the culmination of the P series’ rich heritage of style and functionality.

Huawei debuted the P series with P1 in 2012 but it was the thin, elegant P7 that stunned the smartphone market.

At the London launch, Yu presented the highlights of P8 saying, “Huawei P8 embodies the ultimate in elegance, craftsmanship and durability to continue the minimalist design of previous generations in the P series”

Yu said the Huawei P8 highlights are the nano-injection moulding process results in an industry-leading, seamless tight junction connecting a 1.5mm thin plastic bar with one of the industry’s largest screens.

“The phone is 6.4mm thin, with dual SIM cards, and works seamlessly with a 4G network. The triple-layer shark-gill design enhances the reliability and robustness of the device.”

He also said, “Inside the P8, the new Kirin 930 64-bit Octa-Core chipset boosts performance by approximately 20 percent compared with other phones with similar levels of battery life.

“The body’s sleek back cover is constructed of steel for reinforced structural rigidity.”

It is available in four colours: Mystic Champagne, Titanium Grey, Carbon Black and Prestige Gold, with the last two boasting higher storage capacity at 64GB against the standard 16GB capacity.

There are two versions of the Huawei P8; the standard device for €499 (P5,500) and the premium version for €599 (6,500).

It will initially be available in more than 30 countries including China, Columbia, France, Germany, Mexico, Spain, South Africa, Turkey, UAE and the United Kingdom next month.

Yudi Ramabaran South Africa's Huawei director product marketing told The Monitor in an exclusive interview that P8 would be available in Botswana by June.

Huawei also made a surprise unveiling of the bigger P8max with a 6.8-inch screen. P8max is set to compete in the range so-called “phablet” category with Apple iPhone, 6 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.

Interestingly, Huawei was eager to show what their phones do differently from rivals as well as how they look.

With certainty, the P8 and P8max are Huawei’s trump card over the well-known brands like Apple and Samsung in the smartphone market.
