Research key to economic development BITRI

When addressing the media yesterday, Torto noted that research could render relevant information that could be used in different areas of the country’s economic development.  He further said providing relevant information could provide sustainable innovative solutions.

“We usually send teams to villages to conduct research, get public concerns, as we believe everyone can provide valuable information that we need irregardless of his financial status. “The priority thematic research areas are technologies which are based on electronics, energy and ICT as well as natural resources and materials which include environment and climate change, materials and water,” he said.To further their research capability, BITRI has introduced a group called ICT Associate programme, which has enrolled 20 ICT interns on a two year duration.

The programme aims to develop entrepreneurial skills amongst Batswana youth, as they will use hands on experiential teaching techniques and interactive participation to prepare participants for planning and operating a small business in the ICT sector.

In its two years of existence, BITRI have managed to install 65 solar power streetlights in Diphuduhudu and another 50 at Bere. This solar street light project is called ‘Seding’ and more research is ongoing as BITRI plans to widen the range of facilities available in the street.

“We want to commercialise this product, but we do not have the budget to roll it out. However by June this year we should be having a subsidiary to market the product,” he said.

Torto also said that they do not have the budget to rollout their projects and need partnerships to do so.

BITRI has also developed indigenous mobile application game “morabaraba’ which Torto said they found to be relevant to carry heritage with the modern gadgets. Although Torto appreciates government’s efforts to fund them, he noted that they are still faced with a challenge of inadequate funds, as the money in their disposal wasn’t enough to produce high quality globally competitive research.
