The event will see the venue shift from daytime colour into neon visual stimulation spot at night.  Party revellers will paint a rainbow of colours from 3 pm until midnight.

One of the event organisers, Laone Modukanele, said the Hindu Holi Festival, which celebrates the coming of the spring season, inspired the formation of Gabs Glow.

“It has only been done in other countries, but we decided to bring the idea home,” she said.  She said the outdoor party has become a rite of passage in other countries and in neighbouring South Africa they have the Cape Town Holi We Are One Colour Festival.  Modukanele said after every hour people would pummel themselves with coloured powder.

“This will go on until it gets dark at around 7 pm and then the session will change to glow by night where people will be given glow paint to coincide with the neon lights,” said Modukanele.  Another of the organiser, Obakeng Zuku, said they have long thought about the idea, but only decided to act on it this year.

“We wanted to be different by doing something that has never been done before,” Zuku said.

He said the event would feature a number of local DJs, NT-BASE, Kuchi, Ricky Lamar, T-Izzy, Deelow and Macx Wa Bana. The MC will be Lorato Orapeleng of FLTV. Zuku said they are inviting thousands of partygoers to come to Gaborone Club and join the fun.  “It is not just about the music, but people will enjoy the combination of music, dance, art and visual stimulation,” he said.

The pre-sold tickets for the event go for P100, but the price will change to P120 at the gate.  This includes free colour powder and neon body painting after dark.

The phosphorescent event encourages liveliness and invites party revellers to strike each other with coloured powder.

This will happen while house and other party music reverberate in the background to give this carnival a different meaning from any other festival.
