Marina steps up cardiac procedures

In a statement, PMH stated that the procedures were conducted with the Mauritian Medical Team, which comes from the Cardiac Centre at Pamplemousse, in Mauritius.
Within the total procedures were eight heart surgeries done at Scottish Livingstone by a team of 12 specialists from Mauritius assisted by 34 medical, nursing and allied health specialists from various PMH departments. “The procedures started with heart scans from the sixth to the eighth of April, followed by interventional cardiology procedures within the same period and lastly heart surgeries from the ninth till the 13th of April,” the hospital said.
Furthermore, PMH recently sent nine patients to India as part of its efforts to improve health amongst Batswana. The patients left on April 2 and are expected to be back after two months. “Eight of them went for kidney transplants and one patient was for a bone marrow transplant,” the Hospital said. A senior consultant surgeon, senior medical officer and a transplant coordinator accompanied the patients from Princess Marina.
The travel falls under a five-year agreement, signed last year September, between the Ministry of Health and Apollo Hospitals of India under which both parties agreed to help in these types of surgeries.
The partnership with the Mauritians, meanwhile, has yielded 88 heart surgeries, 17 insertions of pacemakers (batteries),180 angiograms, 16 stands (insertion of wires) and 451 heart scans since 2009 when it began.
