She was overwhelmingly voted into the office on Saturday by 317 votes, while her rival Tshepo Wareus garnered 186 votes at the BDP Women’s Wing Congress in Lobatse.

In an election where block voting was the order of the day, it was the winner takes all, as Team Makgato swept all the boards, including additional members seats.

Makgato’s team looked certain of victory as they started singing as soon as the chairperson’s ballot box was still being counted.

Makgato’s team comprised of vice chairperson Veronica Lesole, secretary, Kgalalelo Mokgweetsi, vice secretary, Tshenolo Mmaleshomo, treasure: Ofitlhetse Masire, vice treasure, Esther Kanaimba-Senai who all won together with their ten additional members. At some point, Wareus team chickened out to contest some seats.

In an interview, Makgato thanked the BDP women for standing for unionism so that they can go back to the basics for exercising their rights as the women.

“I really thank BDP women for believing in me to lead them. BDP women knew what they want and they never allowed men to influence their decision.

I strongly believe in political education because it is the key to anything. “My committee will focus on empowering our women, building women wing structures and for them to understand the value of their vote in anything,” Makgato said.

She said from now onwards the BDP will have effective women wing’s congress and they will further raise their own funds.
