Forget about beach party in Tlokweng

Last year, the event was moved to Tlokweng from its traditional venue, the Lion’s Park, after the organisers overrode protests from Batlokwa tribal authorities through a last minute court order. However, Gaborone has sworn that the party or any such “nonsense” will never be staged in Tlokweng again.
The deputy paramount chief said the 2014 edition was the first and last time for such events to be held in Tlokweng. He told the government not to allow such events to take place because they could harm the country’s reputation. “Beach party! What is that? That is utter nonsense and why should women undress at night! What is a Beach Party when we do not even have beaches in the country,” he told The Monitor on Friday.
He said the Beach Party is an insult to society. “I do not understand why people, especially women should walk around naked. Why are people supposed to be naked? That is an insult,” he said. He warned that if Botswana continues holding such events, it could be a laughing stock. “This is an embarrassment and other countries could laugh at us,” he said. Because of resistance from Batlokwa tribal authorities, the Beach Party was not well-attended last year though it has been a crowd puller ever since it started five years ago. The tribal authorities even mobilised the police to block the event, but were defeated when the organisers brandished a court order.
