Lions Club helps children see

The Immediate Vice President of Lions Club Gaborone, Anthony Mathias said the 35 children would get the assistance they need; be it the spectacles or any other prescribed items.
“Our aim as Lions Club is to get involved in assisting the community whenever there is need for assistance,” he explained.
The children were transported from Molepolole to the capital city by Bokamoso Private Hospital, where they were taken to Eyelight Optic Clinic in Tlokweng.
The medical cost of any child based on the prescriptions will be fully paid by the club upon the outcomes from the laboratory.
Mathias said they are driven by passion to give to the needy as in most cases they (the needy) do not have any source to reach out to for help, when they need it.
“We are here for those people so that they can have someone to turn to when they need help. We also want to alleviate suffering hence (that is) why we have an on going feeding scheme for destitute,” he said. Mathias also said they cooperate with social workers and churches in finding the people in need of their help and subsequently provide the needed aid.
Moreover, Mathias said anyone from the public could personally reach out to them when they need aid, as they are always willing to assist anyone.
He urged the NGOs that could help to come forward and help in whatever way they could by giving back to the community.
Lions Club Gaborone raises funds for charity twice a year towards the winter season and during the festive season. Towards the winter season, they hold a Golf Tournament Day with proceeds held in the organisation’s accounts.
Thereafter, they conduct a cake sale during the festive season and the proceeds are also put into the organisation’s accounts to await disbursement to needy projects.
Lions Club members pay an annual subscription of P750 and the money is split into two equal halves.
The first half goes towards the projects for the needy, while the other half is remitted to the International Lions Club in the United States of America for use in rescue missions during disasters in Lions Club member countries.
Meanwhile, the 48-year– old club has been making other contributions towards the vulnerable in the community. In February, Lions Club donated a specially made wheel chair amounting to P12,500 to a handicapped child. They made another donation of a standard wheel chair of P2, 500 in January.
