Parly debates, passes 89 motions

From eighth parliament, 21 motions were debated and passed, 22 on the ninth parliament, 42 on the 10th parliament and four on the 11th parliament.

Out of the 89 motions, 28 were implemented, parliament heard on Tuesday.

The Minister of Presidential Affairs and Public Administration Eric Molale said 15 motions were implemented on the eighth parliament, seven on the ninth, six on the 10th and none had been implemented on the 11th parliament.

Molale was responding to a question from Boteti East MP, Setlhomo Lelatisitswe.

Lelatisitswe wanted to know the number of motions that were debated and passed by parliament from eighth parliament to date.

The MP also wanted to know when these motions would be implemented.

The minister said 61 motions had not been implemented for various reasons, which include among others, implementable resources.

“It should be noted that some of the motions have been overtaken by events. The motions that have not been implemented and have not been overtaken by events would be implemented when resources become available,” Molale explained.

Some of the motions that had been implemented included government to set aside funds during NDP9 to fast track implementation of youth projects, maladministration and corruption at Botswana Technology Centre, government to establish a policy on citizen economic empowerment, possession and trafficking of human body parts, government to extent a comprehensive short term subsidy to avoid extinction of livestock due to the harsh and prolonged drought, establishment of an economic diversification unit for Lobatse, amongst others.

The motions that had not been implemented include development of a sport tourism policy, which they say its consideration is being made to develop the policy, development of national maintenance policy, tracer study of out-of-school youth, which its consideration is being made to develop the study, review of hand out culture and dependency syndrome in Botswana, government to set up a specialised alcohol and drug treatment and rehabilitation facility, live broadcasting of parliament debates, which they say resource constraints do not permit the implementation of the motion.

However some reasons had not been made on why some motions were not implemented.
