SPEDU transforms into private company

Phuthego said while some SPEDU employees were permanent and pensionable while others were on fixed contract term with government. She further said some of the employees who were on permanent and pensionable basis have been re-employed while others were transferred to other government departments.

“Those whose contracts were still running when the transformation effected will continue working for government and for those whose contracts ended will have to leave. Nobody was laid off as a result of SPEDU transformation,” she said.

Phutego also said SPEDU has been operating as a government unit and its entire staff are still government employees. She noted that the SPEDU transformation process from a unit to a private and independent company is on course.

For the past six months the company was working on formulating its policies, procedures and recruited staff.

“We had agreed with government that while recruiting for the company some of the existing staff can be seconded. End of March was their last day of secondment and those who have been recruited into the company applied and duly competed for those positions.  I do not have the exact numbers of those transferred to other government departments but some who were recruited into the company includes the executive secretary, two managers and two business executives,” she said.

She added that since the new SPEDU does not have a big structure it requires minimal staff.  Phutego, who is also a consultant, also said she was in the process of carrying out a proper handover.  Mokubung Mokubung of the Competition Authority has been appointed the substantive CEO of SPEDU and will begin work next week.
