Slump: GU has lost steam in the title pursuit

The 1-0 defeat to Motlakase Power Dynamos on Tuesday means the star-studded side’s chances have evaporated.

It all started last week at Itekeng Stadium when and where they were thrashed 3-0 by Orapa United. The goals all came in after the sending off of goalkeeper, Goitseone Phoko.

A relatively unknown when he took over the number one shirt this season, Phoko has been arguably GU’s best player.

He is now serving a two-match ban and has already missed the game against Motlakase. He will also miss GU’s next game against FC Satmos in Selebi Phikwe this Saturday.

GU are fifth with 41 points, 15 behind log leaders, Mochudi Centre Chiefs. Pressure is slowly mounting on the Gaborone giants having last won their Premier League title in 2008 despite boasting some of the big name players in the league.

Chiefs maintained their good run and cemented their place at the summit of the log standings with a 2-0 victory over ECCO City Greens in Serowe on Tuesday.

Kekaetswe Moloi and Tendai Nyumasi’s goals were enough to pile more misery on ECCO, a side sitting in a precarious position.

Chiefs have now collected 56 points from 24 games and increased their chances of winning the title.

ECCO on the other hand currently need a miracle to rescue their Premier League status with only six games left before the season comes to an end. They have collected just 17 points.

Other title contenders, Orapa United and BDF XI both dropped points, giving Chiefs an added advantage at the top. Orapa United played to a 1-1 draw with Police XI on Monday while BDF XI drew 0-0 with FC Satmos on Tuesday.

Satmos’ draw did not help them much in their relegation fight. In fact, they surrendered position 12 to BR Highlanders and dropped to position 13.

BR Highlanders registered another shocking victory in a space of two weeks, beating Sankoyo Bush Bucks 1-0 at Maun Sports Complex on Tuesday.

Just recently, they hammered Township Rollers 3-1 as they continue their fight to remain in the Premier League.

They will hope to continued their good run when they take on Letlapeng in Serowe on Saturday, in what is expected to be a thrilling encounter.

Rollers played Nico United yesterday evening and will take on ECCO this Sunday at the National Stadium as the fight to reduce the gap between them and Chiefs continues.

Chiefs face a tricky BMC on Friday while Orapa United will be home to Extension Gunners.
