The 18-hole golf course will still host Nomad Competition shortly after the Easter holiday. GGC club manager, Andre Du Plessis said the blaze that affected the clubhouse has not disrupted their programme.

“The GGC is still operational and members will still relax and enjoy the game. The fire has only affected the clubhouse, but the golf course was not affected,” said Du Plessis. He further said the management is making an arrangement to have an alternative place. “We have held a planning meeting and business began yesterday. We are planning to construct a temporary clubhouse structure since the bar and the restaurant have been destroyed. We are awaiting investigations to be completed before we can consider a permanent structure or refurbunishing the burnt clubhouse,” he said.

He further said even though the fire destroyed their honours board and a few priceless trophies, their documents are still safe as the fire was brought under control before spreading to the office.

“The fire has destroyed our honours board and the men’s championship trophy also but the women championship trophy is still safe as it was in the locker room which the fire did not reach,” explained Du Plessis.

“The Botswana Golf Union is aware of the disaster and they have given us support as their affiliate, they were here when the clubhouse burnt and they were also here yesterday. We are also to inform Botswana National Sports Council and the Minister of Youth Sports and Culture. Our staff is also being given counseling and there are no job losses.”

According to the GGC Facebook page, a temporary bar and large gazebo will be up and running by the end of the week.

The iconic golf course has hosted the BGU Independence Trophy for the past 44 years, the Zone 6 competitions three times, the Botswana Open over 20 times and the Sunshine Tour FNB events on numerous occassions.

It has also hosted seven of the last 12 Botswana Nomads National tournaments and remains the club with the highest members in the country.
