GC mayor, Khama in rare meet

Speaking after the closed-door meeting, Thutlwe said Khama told him that he was the first opposition mayor to request for a meeting with him (Khama) in order to discuss challenges faced at the local authority. According to the mayor, the meeting discussed issues of concern in the City Council as well as ways to improve the city. Some of the issues discussed include streetlights, waste management, infrastructure, bush clearing and others.
“I proposed a meeting with him on March 13 and we met today. As mayor, there are a number of issues that I needed to discuss with the President because our city lacks development,” Thutlwe said.
“I am concerned that the roads of Gaborone are in bad condition and the Council cannot keep on patching them. “Our roads are old and patching potholes would go on forever.
“Again, the city is dark because the streetlights are not working and Council does not have enough money for maintenance.”
He said waste management was increasingly a concern for city fathers, particularly in light of a recent dip in the frequency of collections.
Thutlwe said Khama was equally concerned about issues raised concerning the capital.
“The president was also concerned about issues that I raised and promised to support the City Council in some of the things that we are requesting. He appreciates that Gaborone needs to be developed especially since it is the capital city.
“Visitors from all over the world come here first for various things. He thus assured us of his support,” he said.
