Democratic Republic of Congo was chosen as the French speaking country to be celebrated this year, based on the fact that it is the largest French speaking country in Africa. The Francophonie event has been taking place for years with various countries and cultures being featured and celebrated. Local Rhumba queen Charity Ntebang was featured alongside Zing Zong, Pepe Samy, Franck Wandile Nfumu, Kapenda Katuta and Kennedy. There was food and music galore at the show. French speaking people as well as other nationals thronged the place.

The show organizer and Zing Zong band member, Samy ‘Pepe Samy’ Bamu, said he has been out of the music industry for a long time so he wanted to do a come back show featuring Ntebang.

“Charity has an album out called Tsela and I want to promote it nationwide so that rhumba lovers can enjoy,” he said.

Pepe Smamy and Ntebang have been in the music scene for many years and have performed with local rhumba legends such as Alfred Mosimanegape, Nata Capricorn and Africa Sound. He also anticipates that the francophonie will continue to be an annual event. He said the band would be performing at this year’s Fete de la Musique.

The much-loved songs of the night were Sina Makosa and Shauri Yakho as people went on stage and danced. The crowd wanted encores of the songs. The band’s CDs were on display and fans got an opportunity to buy them. Charity Ntebang is indeed BW’s rhumba queen as her vocals, and dance moves were amazing. She is still energetic and entertaining as always even though she took time off music. She performed two of her songs, Bagaetsho and Moletlo.

Ntebang used to be Kanda Bongoman’s dancer and she told Showtime that she has always been passionate about music especially rhumba.

“ I will launch my album next month and go on tour locally and in Malawi as well as Mozambique to promote it,” she said.

Zing Zong band were a spectacle to watch as they played their instruments with so much oomph and creativity. They performed a variety of songs from Rhumba legends such as Pepe Kale and others.  The Congolese people showed off their dance moves on the dance floor and there was so much exhilaration among rhumba fans.
