Government to sponsor only those who have passed

Despite the deteriorating performance of form five students this year, government has kept the notch up with an increase of two-points.

For his part, Eugene Moyo said the cut off points variation that seems to differ year in and out is merely based on the budget allocated to the ministry of education and therefore this determines the number of students who can be sponsored. “This year’s cut off points is 36 it was based on the allocation budget for 2015/2016. For the past two years, government has lowered the cut off points from 36 to 35 points in 2013 and 34 points in 2014,” he said.

Moyo further said the budget would only allow few students who have registered for re-sponsorship to be sponsored. He also said progression students would be limited to priority areas like health, agriculture, professional accounting and engineering.

First year students who have obtained 36 points and above could commence with applications for tertiary sponsorship as soon as the advert for the sponsorship is released and they have admission letters from institutions.

“The advert will be very detailed and we will ensure that it reaches every corner of the country to ensure that every body is given the opportunity and all those who qualify are sponsored,” he said.

Moyo added that they have partnered with both private and public institutions to assist them in the process of collecting application forms and issuing the sponsorship letters.

He said this would help decrease the delay experienced by students as they are sometimes issued admission letters whilst the sponsorship letters are not yet released.
