Foreign runners dominate Diacore Marathon

The foreigners won all the three races, with Namibian runners dominating the medal table. Zimbabwean runner, Gilbert Mutandiro won the men’s 42km race followed by Namibian, Hosiah Frantz.  Shipingana Simone came third.

In the women’s 42km race, Namibian Anna Autoko came first beating her fellow country woman, Namibian Otini Aimata who came second.  Faithy Kasongo of Zimbabwe settled for third position. Leonard Nampala won the men’s 21 km race in a time of 1:07:50.9 hours followed by local athlete, Godiraone Nthompe who clocked 1:08:43.6 hours. In third position came Shimi Shimeon in a time of 1:08:56.3 hours. In the women’s category, Zimbabwean runner, Samoleki Sommo came first followed by Namibia’s Mema Tjiango. Neonyana Mokhawa settled for third position.

In the men’s 10 km race, Zimbabwean Tendai Zimuto clocked a time of 30:27.4 minutes followed by a local athlete, Sylvester Koko in a time 31:05.4 minutes.

In the third position was Namibian Erich Goeieman with a time of 32:37.7 minutes.  The women’s 10km race was won by local athlete, Gaone Bathoen in a time of 37:24.9 minutes followed by another local athlete, Joyce Tau in a time of 37:30.1 minutes. Katharine Fahrland 50:27.9 minutes came third.

This year’s marathon attracted over 5 700 runners from Botswana, Zambia, Namibia and Zimbabwe. The event raised an amount close to P1 million.  The funds will be donated to different charity organisations in Botswana. The last activity of the day was the 4km fun race.
