According to the Acting Director of roads Kgakgamatso Kalasi on the 3rd of April Thapama circle will be closed for good and after the completion of the interchange the circle will no longer exist and will be replaced by a new and more robust road infrastructure that will be spoken about for generation.
Kalasi was addressing at the meeting consultation on the Tonota-Francistown rehabilitation and construction of interchange junction commonly known as Spaghetti road at Marang crest hotel.
She said that during the interchange traffic congestion is expected to hike and the public is therefore urged to use alternative roads to avoid congestion as well as using more of public transport instead of their private owned cars for the free flow of traffic.
She added that the construction of the interchange is the first of its kind in Botswana that will in turn boost the economy through an improved transportation system.
“As you are aware transportation has a direct link to economic development therefore the expectation is that the business will be able to take advantage of such opportunity presented through this massive infrastructure,” she said
She said that the interchange is expected to ease traffic movement and provide faster and quicker fuel per hour spent whilst traveling. Therefore goods conveyed to their destination will arrive quicker also fuel emission to the environment will be reduced.
She also noted that the facility will generate jobs for Batswana through direct employment.
“Already hundreds of Batswana have been employed on the Tonota-Francistown project, and there is a fair amount of skills transfer to the local people. The expectation is that more Batswana will be incorporated in to the construction of the interchange,” noted Kalasi.
Kalasi further noted that this should be regarded as a milestone by Botswana ‘s Government to bring development to the people and ensure that it benefits the people, be it Batswana communities, the country’s business industry, the tourism industry, potential investors and everyone should be able to get a slice of the cake.
