Meet Nigma, the fear less female comic

Nigma caught the attention of Showbiz a few weeks ago when she was the only female trying her luck at the Soul Food Comedy auditions, hosted at Thapong Visual Arts Center.

She was contesting alongside comedy heavyweights such as Bambino, Charles Manase and Tulani Tau.

The Francistown-born lass said she was born with a ‘funny bone’ and ventured into comedy in 2013. “Being the first woman is nothing new to me.

“I love breaking gender barriers because I believe men and women are equally capable of achieving anything they put their mind to,” she said. Nigma said her family and friends and life situations she observes inspire her comic material. She also shared that she wants to infuse her comedy with poetry and music, to create a form of art called, cometry.

During her performance at the Soul Food Comedy auditions she rocked the stage wearing black martial arts attire, complete with a white belt.

When she introduced herself, she pointed at one of the crowd members saying:  “You see that dark guy over there; if he was to put his arms around my waist I would automatically have a black belt.”

Referring to her attire, she said: “I love performing wearing themed costumes because I am an aspiring costume designer.”

Nigma will perform at Lansmore Hotel on Saturday during the Comedy Club opening.

She is also on the line-up list of the International Heavy Weight Comedy Festival to be held at Gaborone Sun next month.

She joins the bandwagon of female comedians such Tumie Morake, Anne Kansime and Celeste Ntuli, who have managed to crack ribs in the male dominated industry.
