BOKA sets strict requirements in coach search

The association is preparing for a number of international competitions including the All Africa Games to be held in Brazzaville, Congo in September.
BOKA programmes coordinator, Mpho Bakwadi said they have informed affiliates to encourage senior instructors from their federations to apply for the posts.
He told Mmegi Sport yesterday that interested candidates should state which team they want to coach; being senior team kata, senior team kumite, junior team kata and junior team kumite. Bakwadi said interested individuals should have a third Dan black belt or above and must submit a Dan certificate or licence book as proof of qualification.
According to a statement from BOKA, the candidate for the national team coach should be able to write a report and propose a training plan. They should not have a criminal record, including involvement in physical or sexual harassment.
He said the association would thoroughly screen candidates. Bakwadi explained that they were some instances in the past where the national team coach was accused of molesting children. He said they do not want to appoint a coach who is also a member of the executive committee.
“The former vice president-technical was a coach and we do not want a candidate who will have a conflict of interest,” he said.
He said the candidate must belong to a federation affiliated to BOKA and in good standing. The candidates must have a track record of coaching at club or national level and also have a minimum of a Judge B or above.
Bakwadi revealed they want coaches with BOKA qualification, active in BOKA activities and understand World Karate Federation (WKF) rules. The candidate for the junior national team is expected to be a second Dan black belt holder and will be required to explain the Bunkai and perform one kata from his or her style and another one recognised by WKF.
The candidate must also hold a minimum Judge B kata qualification.
Meanwhile, Bakwadi said the final selection for the national teams would be held in Gaborone in March 21. He said the last round of the selection was held in Francistown last weekend.
