Finding new channels: The BRU wants to introduce regional leagues to ensure financially challenged clubs remain in competition

The BRU wants to have B Division league teams in the north and south, where sides compete in their zones before the top two teams from each zone meet in the final for the title.

The new move follows the realisation that most of the A-Division teams are based in Gaborone. Those based in the northern part of the country have been experiencing financial problems.

BRU president, Elijah Jones said the idea would afford teams the opportunity to participate in the league despite financial challenges.

“It is something that we are looking at, bearing in mind that some of the teams are failing to honour fixtures because of poor financial position,” said Jones, adding that the idea will be on trial this season. Jones said former A-Division sides likes Tuskers Rugby Club and EMG Gunners are likely to play in the B-Division during the 2015 season.

According to Jones, Tuskers and Selebi-Phikwe-based Gunners had struggled to financially sustain their campaigns, hence the decision to drop out.

Tuskers found it difficult to travel to Gaborone to honour fixtures.

“But, it was not an easy journey. And the idea (of having zonal leagues) will go a long way in solving the financial challenges being faced by clubs,” he said.
