The chairperson for BDP Francistown region Ford Moiteela revealed this during the regional congress that was held at Shashemooke village over the weekend.

Moiteela warned his party members to refrain from that habit as it tarnishes the party’s image.

He said that organisations as well as individuals have raised a concern over this behaviour saying some party members were in the habit of soliciting for funds using the party name. He said that it was one of the challenges that their office was faced with and pleaded with party members to assist them and come up with ways of stopping the habit.

“We have to act before this attitude destroys our party. Our regional office has been inundated with such complaints. What worries me the most is that such people prefer to receive the solicited assistance in the form of hard cash,” Moiteela said.

Moiteela proposed that branches should consider submitting their requests first to the regional office so that it can be clear that the party has knowledge about such proposed financial assistance.

“It is a wrong thing to use the party’s name for personal gain because if anything goes wrong when dealing with those people fingers will be pointed at the party. BDP is a dignified party and it should not be involved in dirty deals,” he said.

He encouraged constituencies to consider raising funds for themselves, even hosting activities even at ward level to raise money.

“You should not hold activities only when elections are near. But, consider hosting fundraising activities incessantly. Having funds will make it easier for the party to have smooth campaigns because there will be sufficient resources,” he said.

“We did not like this to happen but we were forced to go through to the elections with some areas without structures,” said Moiteela and added that it was time BDP diehards ensure that all the required structures were in place and active. Meanwhile, the regional treasurer Ruth Dlodlo when giving the financial report disclosed that for the past two years the region failed to raise money because they focused on the national congress, candidates launch and general elections preparations.

Dlodlo said that by October 11, 2014 the region had only P23,874 in which they utilised P10,250 in the regional congress with the bank balance currently standing at P13,000.

“This money is too small, the region is pleading for your help.

Help us raise money for our region,” said Dlodlo.
