The ceremonies are usually held every year in schools to recognise and honour learners who have done well in their studies and sports.

Responding to Palapye Sub-Council chairman, Lesedi Phuthego’s speech, Mabjweng said that enhanced prize giving ceremonies could help improve the performance of learners in exams as it is a motivating factor.

“Every year, Batswana decry condensed results of students. As I speak, BGCSE results have just been released and there is a notable decline in performance.

So as councillors, we have to come up with strategies to solve this problem or even work on motivational factors to improve the situation. I believe prize giving is one factor that can actually help improve these poor results if it can only be improved,” said Mabjweng.

He appreciated what the council has been doing to help schools host prize giving ceremonies. He said that every year, each school has been allocated funds for prize giving ceremonies according to enrollment.

In his speech, Phuthego explained that the schools with the lowest enrollment had been given P500. Those with higher numbers are given P1,000 by the Sub Council. Even though Mabjweng applauded the council for the funding, he said it was not enough as the ceremonies involved many activities that require a lot of money.

He urged councils to get more involved in children’s education through discussions in council meetings. He said prize giving is very vital because it inspires both teachers and learners.

The youth activist urged councillors to show their commitment to issues involving young people.

“Let us increase our commitment in youth issues; these are the people who will be leading the country tomorrow. Let us give them sufficient attention.

They need councillors to be there during their meetings to support them, so let us give them that support,” said Mabjweng.

He applauded councillors for electing a youth as the Palapye Sub District Council chairman. He said the move gives him hope that youth are going to be given the necessary attention.

He praised the government’s poverty eradication initiatives but said the problem is with the mindset of people. He said people lack entrepreneurship skills.
