According to the Botswana Federation of Public Sector Unions (BOFEPUSU) secretary general, Tobokani Rari, the negotiations commenced on February 16, 2015 with all sides concluding the engagement rules.

“Parties at this meeting agreed that there is need to engage an independent facilitator of the negotiation process. For the past week, the intense search for the independent facilitator was on and parties have ultimately agreed on the facilitator,” said Rari. He said a second negotiation meeting was held on February 26, 2015 under the facilitation of an independent facilitator.

“Parties at this first session made their preliminary presentations mainly dwelling on the general overview of the economic outlook both domestically and internationally. “Parties then dwelled on the disclosure of information during which the union party demanded some additional critical information that would aid the negotiation process.”

In view of the demanded information that was not readily available, parties agreed to adjourn to give the employer some time to source the information. “Parties further agreed that the meeting should adjourn and reconvene on 9th March 2015 to continue with the negotiation process,” said Rari.
