Khama’s senior private secretary, George Tlhalerwa said the first citizen was doing routine office work on his birthday and held a number of meetings with cabinet ministers and the private sector.

The President’s celebrations contrasted vastly with his northern peer, Robert Mugabe, on whom more than US$1 million was reportedly spent in lavish resort town celebrations that featured all manner of game meat and numerous expensive treats.

Tlhalerwa said they also attended the National Heroes Day commemorations, which was held at the Three Dikgosi monument in the Central Business District  (CBD).  The day was meant to honour the country’s heroes who include World War II veterans amongst others.

Back at the office, Tlhalerwa said many people, including those on radio, were calling to wish the President a happy birthday.

“He was showered with small presents ranging from personal items like shirts, ties and other variables.

“One young girl baked a cake for him and all in all there were four cakes prepared for his birthday.

Tlhalerwa said the President’s private office presented Khama with a card and a small gift while the Office of the President general staff gave him a card that was signed by all the staff members.

“There was no big party. In the past when Khama celebrated his birthday on a weekend, his family would take him out for dinner.

“He could not go out this time because of his busy schedule.”
