Basketball team target Mozambique scalp

The duo meet again in the second leg of the Afro-basketball qualifiers at the Ditshupo Hall in Gaborone tomorrow.

This will be the first international basketball game Botswana ever played on home soil. The team’s co-coaches, William Nyangu and Trynos Moyo have vowed to disappoint the visiting team in the second leg.

Busy at training at BNYC indoor courts this week, Nyangu said he believed chances of overturning the first leg deficit are good.  “We are working on improving a few technical problems that we noticed during the game in Mozambique,” he said as the team worked on shooting drills.

He further said that the technical team at work sharpening the attacking system.  He said with the addition of point guard Duma Setlare, who was absent during the first leg match, the team has more firepower.

Nyangu believes home ground advantage will make a difference and assist them gain the 20 points required for them to qualify for the Afro-basketball tournament ,which Cameroon hosts next year.

He complained that the humid and hot conditions in Mozambique made life difficult.

“It was hot and humid which made it difficult for the players to breathe during the game,” he said. The team will be without the skills of shooting guard Churchill Barrows, who recently left the country to ply his trade in Malta, but China-based Karabo Geche made the squad.  The other coach, Moyo said the team is shaping up well, being 80 percent fit with no injuries. He said one of their major challenges is that most of their players have small frames while their opponents are heavily built.

He said they are working on speed and accuracy to overcome this challenge. The game starts at 8pm and admission is free of charge.
