BR Highlanders confident of Premier League stay

The Mahalapye side has won only six matches while losing 12 and picking up two draws.

They lost 2-1 in their last encounter against leaders, Mochudi Centre Chiefs.

The team’s spokesperson, Jacob Monyeki told Mmegi Sport they still have a chance to survive, although he admitted the team was  not playing well.

“Our team is underperforming because we have been facing big teams in recent games. We hope to improve our performance in our next game. “Even though we lost, we matched our opponents, especially in our game against Magosi,” said Monyeki.

He said their players are not professionals compared to players from bigger sides and the successive defeats affect them.

Monyeki said the situation requires mental strength and experience.

In order to ensure their stay in the Premier League, Monyeki revealed they organised counselling session for the players this week.

He said they intend to work on the mental strength of the players.

“We are optimistic that we will stay in the Premier League. That is why we have planned counselling sessions for the boys to deal with their mental strength.

“We also want to keep everybody happy by all possible ways. Botswana Railways directors will address the boys soon to motivate them,” he said.

Playing home games away from them has been a big disadvantage, he added. Monyeki said if they could play at home, this would benefit the team through gate-takings. He said it is a challenge to attract big name players if the team does not have money.

BR Highlanders’ next appointment is against Township Rollers and Monyeki said they are targeting at least a point.

The team is processing Tafadzwa Maingiri’s papers so that the Zimbabwean is available for the Rollers encounter.

Meanwhile, BR Highlanders expect to gain three points from their game against Extension Gunners after the Lobatse side was accused of fielding an ineligible player.

Gunners had won the match 1-0, but Michael Pillar’s eligibility is being queried and the matter is before the Botswana Premier League’s Disciplinary Committee.
