The body was in such a bad state that the police decided it would be best if tests were conducted on site before he was buried immediately.

The Monitor visited the scene on Saturday hours after the body was discovered by the owner of the yard and found scores of stunned residents watching in disbelieve while the police were still waiting for the pathologist to arrive from Gaborone.

It is suspected that the man, who was only known as Finish, hanged himself last week Thursday. He was staying alone in the yard. There was no suicide note.

While the police and the pathologists were still running tests on the body, the village chief, Fanuael Mokalake mobilised the tribe to prepare a grave at the burial site. The deceased’s neighbour Max Nkele told The Monitor that he was still in shock about the incident.

Nkele said, a day before the corpse was found he felt a stench in the surroundings but just thought an animal might have died in the neighbourhood.

“On Friday there was some bad smell coming from the east. I went around the house and because there are young kids in our yard, I thought maybe it was the smell from stools. There was nothing and then I just concluded that maybe a cat or a dog has died somewhere in the shrubs. But when I came back from the nightclub this morning (Saturday) that smell was now stronger,” Nkele said.

At around 7:30 in the morning Nkele was awakened by the screams of a woman and found the owner of the next yard calling for help.

“It turned out the woman had found Finish hanging from the rafters. For some weeks, I had not seen him but I was not worried because he often disappeared because he did some piece jobs as an electrician.  I am still shocked because this guy was such a nice man who was always smiling,” Nkele told The Monitor.

Although everybody seems to be in the dark about the reasons for the deceased’s action, those close to him have highlighted that he and his girlfriend were frequently in fights.
