Woman Returns From Overseas To Lodge Rape Case � Eight Years Later

The complainant reportedly visited Botswana as a tourist (country of origin unmentioned) that year and has only recently learnt that her daughter who had accompanied her on the trip was raped here during their stay. 

According to a source, the woman had visited the country with her three children and lodged at a certain lodge in Kasane, where the alleged incident took place. The woman apparently heard about her daughter’s ordeal only when she was diagnosed with recurring sexual transmitted infections.

The daughter disclosed the rape after she was persistently questioned on how she could have contracted them.

It is suspected that one of the tour guides at the lodge took advantage of the woman’s daughter who then kept quite until they went back to their respective country.

The mother of the complaint is believed to have flown back into Botswana last week to lodge a complaint with the Kasane police. The police subsequently opened a case file.

When contacted for comment, Kasane Station Commander Silton Fidzani confirmed that they had recorded the case, but declined to give further details.

He said he was not yet at liberty to share information on the case more especially that it was a sensitive matter.

“But, you must understand that this is a 2007 matter. There is still a lot that has to be done in terms of investigations, and at this stage it is too early to divulge any information,” he said.

When quizzed on how investigations would be carried out considering that this was an eight year long matter, Fidzani responded with the Setswana adage, ‘Molato ga o bole’, implying that a crime is never too old for the perpetrator to be prosecuted.
