This week Khama’s supporters told Mmegi that he (Khama) has thrown his hat in the ring and started campaigning for the position through his loyal supporters.
His decision to enter the race means that he is now effectively the front-runner among seven candidates.
According to Khama’s supporters’, Seretse will be cajoled into dropping from the race to make way for the president’s brother. However, this week, Seretse said as far as he is concerned, he is still in the race and had no intention of paving way for anyone else.
Seretse said he had only learned through the media that Khama will be contesting the position.
He also said Khama had not briefed him on his decision to stand for the chairmanship. “I am only hearing this from the media but I don’t know if I should believe you (media),” he said.
Seretse added that if Khama had indeed entered the race, he expected him to inform him accordingly. “When I decided to stand for elections in 2014, I approached him as an MP from my region and told him of my wish to join the race. I am sure he will also do the same if he decides to stand,” he said.
The former minister however doesn’t see anything wrong in contesting against his close family member. “Its politics.
BDP members will decide who should be the chairperson. Tshekedi and I are not only cousins but ‘age mates’, so we are ready to fight it out, if its true he is standing,” he said jokingly.
