Murder accused says ARVs killed girlfriend

Mompoloki Mathape, 34, is alleged to have murdered his girlfriend at Kgaphamadi recently.

However, in the midst of his bail arguments, Mathape made the startling allegations concerning his deceased girlfriend.

“I told the police that the deceased was killed by the ARVs that she was taking. Everybody in Kgaphamadi knows that. I never killed her.

“I am the one who led police to the crime scene and will not tamper with police investigations as they claim.

“Also, nobody will harm me because the deceased and I are from Tswapong and have no relatives her,” he said.

The accused’s statements came after state prosecutor Wedu Mbongwe applied for Mathape to be remanded in custody to allow police to conclude their investigations.

Mbongwe called on the investigating officer Wazha Morobosi, to state why Mathape should not be granted bail.

“We fear that he may tamper with investigations. Also members of the community may harm him as they were angered by the incident.

“He should be remanded in custody for two weeks before he can be considered for bail,” he said.

Mbongwe added that the accused would be taken for psychiatric evaluation. Senior Magistrate Thebeetsile Mulalu remanded Mathape in custody until February 26.
