Over 400 strikers unemployed

The outgoing BOFEPUSU president Masego Mogwera disclosed this during the BOFEPUSU congress over the weekend. She said workers had gone through all manner of turbulences and hardships since the 2011 industrial action and were yet to recover from the effects.

“This is a serious challenge to these members and their families as some were the breadwinners, youth, heads of families. It is therefore critical for us gathered here today to think deeply on what form of assistance we can offer these fellow comrades who sacrificed their jobs in the struggle,” said Mogwera.

She also said from 2012 the organisation has been inundated with numerous legal battles, which have drained their coffers.

“It was however critical for the federation to fight all these wars to protect the rights of members and above all to ensure that there is compliance to laws that our respected Parliament had made.

Our continuous engagements with the employer at the courts of law shall not anyhow cause us to lose focus but have instead made us more vigilant and united as the federation to collectively fight for our existence and our space.”

She requested her comrades to come up with strategies that could be used to ensure they protect their territory and restore the confidence of their members who are gradually getting weary of the poor conditions that they are made to work under. She also encouraged BOFEPUSU affiliates to remain as a family, united and trusting one another.
