Moroka victim�s mother speaks

Margert Danster told Mmegi that the decision by the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) not to prosecute the former cabinet minister has left the family with more questions than answers.
She said the move shows that the prosecuting authority hasn’t thoroughly assessed or probed the circumstances that led to the tragic death of her son.
“I was informed by the Tsabong police that the matter was referred to DPP but ever since then, I felt something fishy was going on. I did, however, remain hopeful that if DPP was handling the matter, it would probably bear satisfactory results,” said Danster. She believes Moroka should have at least been slapped with a charge of manslaughter.
The former MP shot and killed Kealeboga in what he says was an unfortunate accident.
Danster told Mmegi that she felt perturbed by the sudden hand-over of the matter to DPP, more so that it happened at the early stages of the initial investigations by Kgalagadi police.
She condemned the DPP for failing to update her on the case. It was not until she read in the press that she knew Moroka would not be charged. She doubts the credibility of the DPP assessment. “They seem to have dwelt more on Moroka’s mysterious version of events,” Danster said. She said she will not rest until the truth of what actually happened at the scene is revealed.
She said she has only received a copy of Kealeboga’s death certificate but not the postmortem report. “I only learnt in the newspapers that I was given a postmortem report but that is untrue. Reports say the police thought they had a case only for the DPP to decline to prosecute Moroka.
Assistant DPP director, Nomsa Moatswi, said in a letter that: “The evidence of those who witnessed the incident does not suggest rashness or negligence on the part of the accused person”.
“The DPP entered no prosecution decision in favour of Neo Moroka.
The death of Kealeboga was accidental and no person or persons can be held criminally liable for such an unfortunate occurrence hence the case was closed,” said Principal Public Relations officer in the Attorney General’s chambers, Caroline Bogale-Jaiyeoba.
