Freak storm leaves trail of destruction in Thamaga

Asif Kablay, owner and manager of Furniture Express told Mmegi he lost furniture worth over P80, 000.
“I received a call from my assistant manager around 6:30pm in the evening where I learnt the roof of my shop had been blown off. I had stock worth over P180,000 but only managed to salvage about half of it,” he said. By midmorning, Kablay’s store resembled a mini-swamp as he and two assistants raced against time to save furniture that had not been soaked in water.
On one side of the store were several damaged beds, living room suites, wardrobes and headboards that Kablay was still to determine if they could be of any worth.
“I may have to sell some of the damaged goods at 50 percent of the initial value,” he said. He explained that most of the goods were actually paid for in part and were awaiting customers to pay the balance.
“The goods have been bought on hire purchase, and I was only waiting for customers to pay the balance,” he said. He explained that most customers had already paid 80 percent of the value.
Driving through the village revealed widespread damage, with houses roofs blown off, electric poles and trees damaged.
The storm also visited its fury on certain landmarks in the villagers.
“It destroyed several trees that have always been used by politicians for their rallies,” said a resident.
Mmegi could not reach the Member of Parliament, Tshenolo Mabeo and village Kgosi Gobuamang Gobuamang who by late yesterday afternoon were said to be still touring the village to assess the damage.
