BDP doles out P300,000 for youth wing congress

A high-ranking party insider said the funds were raised from the party structures and the hosting region, North East. The amount will fund logistics such as hiring of public address systems, footing accommodation and food bills for delegates, as well as decorations.
On Wednesday evening, the BDP youth leader, Andy Boatile refused to discuss the amount the party will spend on the congress. “All I can say is that the money is a significant sum but I cannot divulge figures because they are confidential,” he said.
He added that all costs for the congress had been paid for in full. “The party and the hosts each contribute money for the congress. The congress will be a success in terms of planning and logistics,” he said.
Boatile stated that over 550 delegates from the 57 constituencies across the country would be part of the congress. “We expect each constituency to be represented by eight delegates and two councillors. There will be additional invited guests. This will take the tally of delegates to around 550 people,” he explained. He added that delegates would pay the costs of travelling to the elections from their own pockets.
Boatile did provide details of the programme, but indicated that BDP leader Ian Khama would officially open the congress today.
Youth leaders from Zambia, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania and Lesotho are also expected to attend the three-day congress.
