Hitchhikers shoot woman dead

The police said the incident occurred around 11pm along the road near Sebina junction. Senior Superintendent, Israel Tuelo said that the deceased was from Kasane and was in the company of two males driving an Isuzu van. Earlier at Nata, the deceased and her friends gave four men a lift. At the Sebina junction, a misunderstanding arose which resulted in the shooting. Tuelo said the police received a report from the owners of the car alleging that they gave strangers a lift and along the way, they did not agree on certain things that caused the misunderstanding.

He said after the shooting the owners of the car – two men - ran away leaving the vehicle behind with the dead woman inside. The two then alerted the police after the hitchhikers drove away with the car.

“According to investigations, it appears there were certain undisclosed issues that the strangers and the owners of the car did not agree upon that led to the fatal shooting,” Tuelo said.

“It appears as if during the quarrel, one of the four men shot the woman and the two males that were in her company ran away leaving their car behind,” he added.

“Strangely, upon their return to the crime scene (victims) they found the car gone,” he said.

Tuelo said it looks like the four men drove away with the car and dumped it with the deceased inside. “On arrival, the police took the woman to Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital (NRH) where she was certified dead upon arrival,” he said.

Unconfirmed reports say the deceased was from Kasane with her boyfriend and her boyfriend’s brother. It is said that the two brothers hail from Sebina.

The police have called for support from members of the public to help them with information that could lead to the arrest of the culprits.
