Police release boys accused of rape, assault

Selebi-Phikwe Police Station commander, Superintendent Victor Nlebesi, said the victim and her friend were on their way from a night vigil when they met their attackers. He said the two 17-year-old boys are known to the girls. They allegedly pounced on the girls and held them hostage. They led them to the dark parts of the village but one of the girls escaped. Her friend who remained behind was raped by one of the boys in an abandoned house. Before, the rape it is alleged that the boys assaulted her.

Nlebesi said the two boys were later arrested and then released into their parents’ custody while police investigations were ongoing.

Besides the rape charge preferred against one of the boys, the pair is also liable to a charge of assault as they allegedly took turns assaulting the girl immediately before the rape. Nlebesi said the house where the girl was raped was used by a suspected serial rapist who committed horrendous offences recently and is still on bail.

Still in Mmadinare, a 15-year-old junior secondary school student who was reported as missing to the police by her parents sometime last week, was found at her boyfriend’s house in Mmadinare.

Nlebesi said the juvenile was absent from school on Thursday and Friday last week, but only showed up on Saturday at her parents’ place.

She confessed that she was at her 23-year-old boyfriend’s place. Nlebesi revealed that the man, who originates from Zimbabwe, was an illegal immigrant and also a suspect in robbery crimes in the village.
