Holmes and Tsiang, both Under-14 players, accumulated 180 and 170 points respectively to qualify for the AJC in Tunisia next month. Tsiang is based at the High Performance Centre in South Africa. In Tunisia, Tsiang and Holmes will be campaigning together with compatriot, Innocent Tidimane, who qualified due to his high ranking.

Botswana team coach, Wellington Sibanda told Mmegi Sport he expected more players to make it to Tunisia. “I was targeting at least three players from the junior teams but I am sure these two will represent us well,” he said. The coach said the absence of outstanding player, Marang Makolo during the qualifying tournament was a blow as she would have made the cut.

Tsiang and Holmes have started preparations for AJC in different camps. Holmes is doing his build up sessions in Gaborone while Tsiang is in South Africa. Sibanda said they have told Tsiang’s coach to rectify her weaknesses

He said lack of game time contributed to the low number of players going to Tunisia. He said if players are involved in more tournaments, the standards will improve. He called for more tennis coaches at public schools to develop talent. The technical team travelling to Tunisia with the players is yet to be selected.
