Looking forward: Butale says the reliance on diamonds has to end

Addressing his constituents at Masunga kgotla recently, Butale said the high unemployment rate in the country can be solved by having fully functional industries, as well as reducing over-dependence on one commodity –diamonds.

He said the country is endowed with natural resources like coal which should be fully exploited for the benefit of the citizens. Butale said car manufacturing is one avenue that can be exploited as the country has abundance of metals.

“We must fully utilise the metals we have to start our own car plant. We used to have Hyundai car plant and we could draw lessons from it going forward.

“Interestingly, we have capable Batswana who could lead this multi-billion industry. A young Motswana made an aircraft thus demonstrating his skills in manufacturing,”he said. Butale further encouraged parents to motivate their children to work hard at school to make the best use of the newly established Botswana International University of Science and Technology.

On other issues, Butale encouraged his constituents to make North East District a centre of excellence where outsiders could come and do benchmarking.

He urged all to be productive in whatever they engage in to bring positive results for the district. He demanded service delivery of high standards from the civil servants.

“I urge civil servants to give customers quality service all the time. I urge you to always demonstrate the spirit of botho when attending to your customers,” he said.

For their part, residents called for the development of access roads in the district to facilitate free movement within villages.

In addition, residents asked for a Botswana Unified Revenue Service office in the village saying it will help cut travel costs for villagers and help reduce congestion  at the Francistown office.
