The culprit Buchilo Bechwa got a barrage of criticism from Batswana after his nasty twitter remarks were first screen-shot, shared, and condemned by an online publication, Botswana Online Magazine, before it was also shared on fight crime in Gaborone facebook page. Hundreds of concerned Batswana called for his immediate arrest and stern punishment.
While the mother of the child, Tebogo Mokwena over the weekend told The Monitor that the culprit phoned to claim that he did not do it, The Monitor can confirm that on Wednesday and Thursday , Buchilo Bechwa was actively defending his actions on facebook, claiming that it was just a joke, and that his parents understood it simply as such.
However, by Friday, Buchilo Bechwa had bolted out of Facebook and all his previous comments could not be tracked.
Despite wide talk on social media on Friday and Saturday to the effect that the culprit was in Police custody, the mother of the girl child told The Monitor that she had not yet reported the matter to the police. Mokwena said she does not know the culprit personally, and only learnt late in the week that he is a distant relative, but said he will have to face the consequences of his irresponsible actions irregardless of whether they may be distant relatives or not.
“ He finally phoned after claiming to be busy at work; I have made it clear to him what ever happens he only has himself to blame because no one asked him to comment on the picture, voters simply had to click like on the photo of the child, but he decided to comment in a way that suited him. “ What action we will be taking after this, he only has himself to blame; his comments were very unpleasant”, said the mother.
“ I am yet to meet with his relatives and the pageant organisers regarding the way forward”, said Mokwana.
Although he has since bolted out of Facebook, the culprit was still active on twitter over the weekend using his usual twitter handle, Uncle B @bechwa_Dumbu.
On Saturday he wished happy birth day to his 3 year old son, Andile, tweeted about going to watch Dirang Moloi making his debut for Township Rollers.
He also used his twitter account deflate criticism as he claimed that he is part of the family. In one of his tweets during the barrage on January 28 he says,
the way my dad trust me gaaka tsena mo twitter oka wa ka pelo shem.!LOL …gatwe my dad wa ganetse distory tse gotweng kedi tweet-ile.!LOL. On the same day he also regretted that somebody had told his mother about the tweet.
