Sankoyo Bush Bucks celebrate a goal against Gaborone United in Maun

The victory came days after the greenhorns were docked three points for using an ineligible player in their first game of second round against Motlakase Power Dynamos. Ngurungu have returned their points’ tally to 27 after their giant-killing act.

The game was delayed for 20 minutes to allow scores of fans who were still outside to enter the stadium. Sankoyo score twice in the second half to collect maximum points after the first half ended in a stalemate. Ngurungu packed their midfield to counter GU, which was using 4-2-4 system. One of Sankoyo’s best chances was wasted by striker Thato Monowe just before half time. Just after the restart, GU coach, Rahman Gumbo pulled out Mandla Mgadla for Mpho Kgaswane. However it was Ngurungu who drew first blood through, Monowe in the 56th minute. The striker headed in a free kick from defender Kealeboga Molebatsi to send the stadium into frenzy. Sankoyo was utilising its pace, which has so far proved its main asset against many opponents. Chasing the game, GU later substituted Tebogo Sembowa and with the hardworking Ronald Chikomo but still failed to find their rhythm. Gumbo also pulled out Mothatego for Matthew Nyamadzawo in the 70th minute.

GU missed a number of chances and were duly punished when Sankoyo sealed victory in the 40th minute from marksman Morris Ruzivo. Ruzivo collected a pass from Onkagetse Mojwaine and neatly placed the ball over the out of the line goalkeeper to the far corner.

In a post match interview, Gumbo said his team did not play its usual game, hence they lost. “We allowed ourselves to play their kind of game - the kick and running kind of football and we paid the price,” he stated. He said it is back to the drawing board as they prepare for their next encounter against Letlapeng. Sankoyo coach, Philani Mabhena said that everything went according to plan for his charges. “We were prepared for them and worked hard in training. My players deserve this victory especially against a big team such as GU,” he said.
