Symphony Health Launches Pregnancy Medical Benefit

Launching the product on Thursday, Symphony Health Medical Aid Chief Executive Rose Tatedi said they are looking at the pregnancy cover from a different perspective as they provide a cover of up to P350,000 for expecting mothers and the baby.

‘We recognise pregnancy is important and expecting mothers are always worried about the baby and their status, so we wanted to give them a peace of mind throughout their pregnancy,” she said.

Tatedi said the medical cover includes two perspectives, the mother and the baby. During pregnancy, the mother would be given some gifts including pregnancy magazines and during delivery, the mother will also be given baby products and clothing hampers to welcome the baby and another batch of gifts would be delivered when the baby turns one month old.

Tatedi highlighted that Symphony health continues to be the new generation Medical aid cover offering new generation products. Symphony Health, which is the ninth medical aid scheme in Botswana, is different from other schemes in terms of its benefits structure, as well as the scope of its membership coverage.

The risk pool, which is 75 percent of the monthly premium, covers uncontrollable expenses such as surgery or hospitalisation while the 25 percent of the medical savings account is a percentage of one’s monthly premium that goes towards payment of controllable expenses such as hospital visits and chronic medication. Symphony medical aid scheme consists of two components being a risk pool and a medical savings account.

Under Symphony Health is an open medical aid scheme through which one can cover the various members of the extended family such as parents, parents’ in-law, uncles/aunts, nephews/nieces and children above the age of 21 years who are neither working nor studying.

Currently 83 percent of the population in Botswana use government healthcare system and only 17 percent are covered by medical aid funds.
