Trial dates set in BDF arson case

Ikanyeng, who is a Guidance and Counselling teacher, will be tried on June 29, 30 and July 14, 15 and 16.
On Monday, defence counsel, Kabelo Gaonyadiwe, applied for the matter to be dismissed, saying the prosecutor, Mompoloki Gaboiphiwe was absent without any explanation. When the stand-in prosecutor, Ogolotse Tampa explained that Gaboiphiwe would only be back in two weeks due to a training course, Gaonyadiwe applied for dismissal of the case arguing that “the State is not serious about prosecuting my client within a reasonable time”.
Yesterday, Gaonyadiwe changed his tune and confirmed receiving documents from the prosecution showing that Gaboiphiwe is attending a month-long course. Gaonyadiwe then withdrew his application for the matter to be dismissed.
Ikanyeng, who has pleaded not guilty to the offence, appeared in court in the company of her husband who is a junior army officer at Area S camp. When the incident happened last year, the alleged assailant’s motives were unclear. However, Ikanyeng was later admitted to the Sekgoma Memorial Hospital in Serowe for psychiatric examination. She spent time at the hospital convalescing.
